The cost of routine eye exams and prescription eyewear can be of real concern, especially for large families. In many cases, vision insurance can lower these annual expenses. A vision insurance policy is not the same as medical insurance. Regular medical health insurance plans protect you against financial losses due to unexpected eye injuries or disease. Vision insurance, on the other hand, is a wellness benefit designed to provide routine eye care, prescription eyewear and other vision-related services at a reduced cost.

What Does OHIP Cover?

  • Persons 19 and younger receive coverage once every 12 months through Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).
  • Persons 65 and older receive coverage once every 12 months through OHIP.

  • If you are between the ages of 20-64 and you have an eye disease or a medically required health condition that puts you at risk of eye disease also receive coverage once every 12 months through OHIP. Below is a list of examples:
      • Diabetes
      • Cataracts
      • Macular Degeneration
      • Glaucoma
      • Lazy eye or very poor sight
      • Recurrent corneal compromise (keratitis)

Flexible Spending Accounts

Many employers are offering Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options to employees. Sometimes these are referred to as cafeteria plans and are elective, supplemental insurance savings plans. These plans are designed to let you save money in an account, pre-tax, to pay for additional medical expenses such as eye exams, glasses, contacts, and often laser vision surgery. Check with the benefits administrator at your work to see if you are eligible for this program. FSAs can typically be used in conjunction with any vision insurance plan to offset any out-of-pocket costs on your behalf.
